Our control-mad government is determined to force ID cards upon us and have us all registered on a national database.

CCTV tracks our every movement, and anti-terror laws are used for the most trivial things, like taking photographs in a public place.

If we complain at this intrusion of our privacy and erosion of our civil liberties, we are told that if you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to fear.

Justice minister Jack Straw has recently vetoed the publication of the minutes of a cabinet meeting in which the decision was taken to support a US invasion of Iraq. But surely Mr Straw, if you have nothing to hide...
