Too little is being done to ease congestion and clear graffiti at Whitton station, Labour campaigners have claimed.

South West Trains has already promised to add 108 carriages to its services to and from Waterloo station, providing an extra 5,400 seats, between May 2013 and December this year.

But Labour candidates in the Heathfield ward, where the station is located, say more needs to be done to improve conditions for passengers, especially with the Rugby World Cup coming to Twickenham next year.

When they wrote to the train company asking what it was doing, they were told: "We try to anticipate numbers based on previous figures, counts and research; however it is ultimately our passengers who choose the service they travel on."

Heathfield Labour candidate Craig Owen said: "We welcome the increase in capacity over 2013/14. However, it is totally unfair for SWT to blame passengers for congestion. The company should have planned for the projected increase in passenger numbers when Government awarded the franchise back in 2006.

"Evidently these additional carriages do not go far enough in easing congestion on peak services via Whitton station.

"We will respond to South West Trains to ask specifically which services will receive additional carriages this year and to push for the removal of graffiti on the station’s walkway and station signs."
