Ranu Mehta-Radia, of Northwood Hills, was named as Tesco Enterprising Mum of the Year for her work setting up a Saturday school 19 years ago.

Sai School, which meets at Shaftesbury High School in Harrow, now has 300 pupils and is run by 40 volunteers.

They teach children about universally shared cultures and human values as well as their religion.

The mother-of-two said: “Initially we funded it ourselves, literally dipping into our grocery shopping money until donations began to come in.

“Serving the nation remains a priority for us, we want to spread our wings and resonate this message to all children and young people.

“I am blessed that my husband and children allow me to get on with it.”

She was presented with her enterprising mum award – one of six categories – at a star-studded ceremony at The Savoy, in London, on Sunday, March 23.
