THE Northwood Hills Estate will cease to be recognised from today (Friday) and will now be known as Hillside, Northwood Hills.
The historic decision was made at a Hillingdon Council meeting, and was the result of months of consultation.
The area covers around 24 hectares, and was also declared an area of special local character at the meeting, giving it protection against planning developments.
There was a unanimous agreement from the Northwood Hills Residents Association in support of the proposals.
The area is unique in the large number of 1930s bungalows, and the new name of Hillside was derived from the original 1930s sales brochure by Morgan and Edwards Ltd which was discovered by a resident.
It was during the consulation for the area to be made an area of special local character that requests from residents for the name change came about as they felt it more specific to the area.
Councillor Andrew Retter, Conservative representative for Northwood Hills, supported the decision to change the name of the area.
He said: "Jonathan (Bianco) and myself are delighted, we as a council are allowing the residents to be happy, this proves authorities are listening and have taken note of what people want."
The area is bounded by Hillside Road to the north, Stanley Road, to the south-east, and Northwood Way to the south-west.
Now it is a designated area of special local character, there will be increased control over development in the area, and residents who were keen to protect their unique bungalows are relieved.
Ann Collis, of the Northwood Hills Residents Association, said: "We are obviously thrilled to learn this news, I speak on behalf of the residents when I say that everybody will be very happy.
"Hillside is a lovely name, it's good for history, dropping estate from the name is the right thing.
"With a conservation area planning issues are very clear cut, without it, it is not, and we have had some very dodgy planning issues round here."
Councillor John Bianco, Conservative representative for Northwood Hills, said: "There has been a threat to the area with unsuitable plans and hopefully this will put an end to all that."
