A NORTHOLT man has been arrested following raids targetting an alleged people smuggling gang.

Amarjit Singh Mudhar, 46, was charged along with four others with conspiracy to facilitate illegal immigration.

He was arrested during a series of co-ordinated raids by police and immigration officers on Wednesday (May 22) in London, Luton and Essex. Simultaneous raids were also carried out in France and Germany.

The arrests were the culmination of a joint investigation into an alleged criminal network believed to assist Sri Lankan illegal immigrants attempting to reach the UK. Immigrants are believed to have been smuggled in vehicles through the Channel ports. Some would also travel onwards from the UK to North America using fake documents.

Investigators believe clients could be charged around £4,500 to reach the UK from France.

Computers, documents, cash and mobile phones were also seized from a number of addresses and are currently being examined.
