THE proposal to partially privatise Royal Mail (supported by both the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats, who wanted to sell off

even more) has nothing to do with saving pensions or technological investment.

Both of these issues could be dealt with while Royal Mail remains in government ownership.

Privatisation is driven by an ideology of small government and competition, whatever the cost.

It makes sense for the residential mail business to be a monopoly, avoiding the duplication of competing post vans driving around. It is also one of our most crucial services, providing immense benefits to individuals and communities.

If the sale goes ahead, which services will be sacrificed to make the loss-making business more attractive to investors? Which assets will be thrown in as sweeteners?

The Green Party remains opposed to privatising our public services.
