New Year dieters could take a lesson from David Fearn from Pimlico, who has lost more than three-and-a half-stone in six months despite the temptations of chocolates and mince pies.

Mr Fearn, 60, of Bessborough Place, Pimlico, has been overweight for much of his life, but his weight rocketed to 25 stone following the death of his parents in 2000.

He said: "While they were sick I kept going between hospital and my house, so often had to eat quick meals like bacon sandwiches. I live by myself, and I find you don't cook proper meals when it's just for one person."

He visited the doctor six months ago, as his weight began affecting his liver and kidneys, and was putting strain on his knees. After being referred to a free service offered by Westminster Primary Care Trust (PCT) to help people lose weight, he has shed pounds and plans to take part in a 25km sponsored walk in Holland to help the Army Benevolent Fund.

Mr Fearn said: "It has worked wonders for me. I still allow myself the odd bacon sandwich or bowl of ice cream, but I save those for treats."
