The owner of a new wine bar has promised to add some sophistication to Pinner High Street after her venture was given the go ahead last week.

Her plans for Vintage Wine Bar were approved by Harrow Council's licensing panel on Thursday and it is now expected to open within the next few months.

It will replace the vacant space next to Prezzo at the top of the road which was once part of the Hand in Hand pub.

But far from attracting the same clientele as her predecessors, new owner Delia Markham is keen to add some class to Pinner's night scene.

The 40-year-old, who has lived in the village for most of her life, said: "I really care about Pinner and I have been looking at the idea from a resident's point of view.

"I'm trying to appeal to an older, more sophisticated crowd, who want to have a quiet drink with some back-ground music on.

"I don't think there is an awful lot in Pinner, or Harrow for that matter, which appeals to people of my age and I think it will be good for the area to have something like this."

The application did receive some objections when it was first presented to the council, but no complainants turned up to the licensing meeting.

Some had written to vent concerns about anti-social behaviour, drug taking and noise pollution, but Miss Markham is already making provisions to prevent this.

She added: "One of the first things I'm doing is making sure I have CCTV around the building. I will also be employing someone to work on the door, but I'm also hoping to make it strictly over 21s only.

"I don't think the kind of people who will want to come here will cause problems and it will only have a maximum capacity of 50 people anyway, so it's not really a worry."

News of the latest addition to the High Street has been welcomed by some quarters and Claire Campbell, of Rayners Lane, Pinner, is looking forward to the new addition.

The 29-year-old said: "A wine bar is a good thing in my opinion. It would be nice to go to somewhere a little classier to have a quiet drink without everyone feeling the need to get rowdy. There isn't anything else in

Pinner like that really so it will provide another option, which is great."
