A new online tool allowing people to track the planes flying over their homes has been launched by Heathrow.

Users of WebTrak My Neighbourhood can simply type in their postcode to see how many aircraft have passed overhead during the last month, year or quarter of a year.

The site also shows the proportion of take-offs and landings using each flight path as a percentage of the total, and which hours were busiest for each flight path.

Bosses at Heathrow said it was only the second airport in the world and the first in the UK to launch such a tracking tool, which they hoped would help keep residents better informed about operations.

Heathrow already runs a Webtrak site, allowing people to track aircraft in real time and monitor their altitude, model and how much noise they are generating at various checkpoints.

Heathrow's sustainability director Matt Gorman said: "From meeting with communities around Heathrow, we know they want access to good quality information so they can understand patterns of aircraft noise in their local area and what is being done to tackle it.

"We hope they will find the new tool useful and continue to give us feedback on how we can improve our communications around noise in future."

The launch comes just a few days before Heathrow is due to reveal its detailed submission for a third runway to the Airports Commission.

It also follows the publication of 'A Quieter Heathrow', setting out steps by the airport to reduce noise and improve community engagement. These measures include encouraging quieter planes and improving mitigation, such as insulation, for those affected by aircraft noise.
