A man is furious that a traffic island built close to his home means he can no longer turn left out of his drive.

Denzil Peake, 54, of Priory Avenue, Harefield, said the island was built by Hillingdon Council at the junction of Harvil Road about two weeks ago, to help reduce accidents.

Mr Peake said: "I understand the council put the island here as a traffic calming measure, because we have had many accidents.

"But they've widened the road, so I don't see how it's actually helped slow traffic down.

"Instead it's made it more dangerous for me to leave my drive."

He said the only safe way he can now go left is by first turning right out of the drive and then going to the end of the road and turning round.

Mr Peake said: "My other alternative is to put myself in a situation where I am manoeuvring the car on to a busy road and reversing far enough so that I can turn to the left without hitting the island.

"But I don't see why I should have to put myself in that kind of danger.

"It's frustrating because the council don't seem to put enough thought into things like this before going ahead with it.

"They've put a speed camera on a hill further up the road, but cars slow down when they go up a hill anyway."

He said he complained to the council three times last week but has not been told whether the issue will be resolved.

Philomena Bach, director of environment and consumer protection at Hillingdon Council, said: "This island has been installed to make crossing the road to get to the bus stop safer for people.

"In this particular case, we would like to work with the resident to address any concerns he has."
