The £11million Wembley Primary School will welcome more than 700 pupils when it opens on Monday.

In 2006 Brent Council began plans for construction of a hi-tech building in East Lane, Wembley, to house learning facilities and a children's centre. The school has taken 16 months to build and covers more than 4,000 square metres.

It includes a library area, a school hall and an internet café, which will be available to the public.

Residents were able to review design plans and suggest changes.

Pupils and parents contributed to the designing of the environmentally friendly building, which is naturally ventilated, and includes an under-ground pipe system to control the air temperature.

Even the toilets use rainwater, which is collected on site.

Computers are available in every classroom, but outdoor activity is also encouraged in the newly landscaped playing fields and play-grounds.

The children's centre is being developed to offer services to support families. Parents can receive health and employment advice, speech and language therapy, parenting classes or simply make use of the creche.

Headteacher Rob Fenton is delighted with the school's new design. He said: "There has been a real feeling of excitement among the children as the cranes have gone up and the building has taken shape.

"It's a remarkable design, and a vibrant and exciting environment for our children to learn and progress in."
