An estate in north Hayes now has its own playground, and dozens of children were invited to try it out for the first time.

Part of the neighbourhood square in Portland Road has been filled with slides, swings, and climbing frames.

Families from the Charville Children's Centre, around the corner in Bury Avenue, were invited to the grand opening on Tuesday morning last week (April 8), and a crowd of youngsters couldn't wait to get on the new equipment.

The Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor Allan Kauffman, was there for the ribbon-cutting formalities, but even he, in his ceremonial robes, could not resist joining in the fun and hopping on the zip line for a quick slide.

The children also scattered poppy seeds, to bloom in time for the First World War Centenary celebrations later this year.

The park has cost Hillingdon council just under £100,000. It is also bordered by Exmouth Road, Weald Way, and Kingsbridge Way.

The borough first announced the project in October last year.

Karen Gray, manager at the Charville Children's Centre, said: "For weeks, children have been seeing it being built and asking when is it going to be ready. It is a wonderful addition to this part of Hayes.

"This is a huge patch of grass that was previously used by dog walkers, and parents didn't want their children to play there because of the dog mess.

"Now, families with young children have somewhere safe, and close by, where they can go. And it is free.

"This is a dense residential area, and local reesidents will care about this community space, and make sure it is looked after and respected.

"At the centre, we encourage healthy lifestyles and wellbeing, and anything gets people active and outdoors is great.

"It would be great if the council can put an outdoor gym in the area too so the whole community and different generations can also enjoy the space."
