HILLINGDON Council has sworn in its new mayor.

At its annual meeting on Thursday last week, Councillor Michael Markham (Con, Manor), was officially elected to the post.

He has been a councillor since 2006 and was the deputy mayor last year.

Mr Markham said: “I’m very much looking forward to my year as mayor for Hillingdon, a wonderfully exciting, dynamic and diverse borough.

“We’ve got an exciting 12 months ahead with the Queen’s jubilee and the Olympics.”

He takes over the role from Mary O'Connor.

Both Mr Markham and his wife, Rosemary, are members of the Ruislip Lions Club and, as such, play an active role in raising funds for local causes and charities.

Mrs Markham has also been responsible for organising the annual Ruislip Lions outdoor theatre event for many years.

The mayor’s charity appeal this year will be raising funds for the children’s hospice Shooting Stars Chase, for Hillingdon Young Carers and for Age UK Hillingdon.

The new deputy mayor is Councillor Allan Kauffman (Con, South Ruislip ), and the deputy mayoress is his wife, Lynne.
