Designs for a new high-tech library in Shepherd's Bush are being shown at an exhibition.

The first images of the planned Westfield library have been put on display at Shepherd's Bush Library in Uxbridge Road. The modern building will be constructed next to the Westfield Shopping Centre, in Wood Lane, and is due to open next July.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council wants to move all the books from the current Shepherd's Bush library to the new centre, but a spokesman said it was 'too early to say' what will happen to the existing Uxbridge Road centre once deserted.

He added that no librarians would lose their jobs in the move.

The new library will stock books, newspapers, magazines, CDs and DVDs. There will be meeting places for residents, and there are proposed areas for children and teenagers to play on a Wii computer console or listen to music downloaded from the internet.

New aspects to the library include self-service terminals, which could make the process of taking out books or CDs quicker and easier.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council's cabinet member for residents' services, Cllr Paul Bristow, said: "The new Shepherd's Bush Library has been designed specifically to cater for our residents' needs, which are continually changing as more and more technical advances are made.

"If we can encourage people to come into the library, then that can only be a good thing.

"This truly will be one of Britain's most innovative public libraries."

Opening hours will be extended, the building will be kitted out in state-of-the-art furnishings and fittings, and there will be a separate employment bureau with interview facilities run by the council's regeneration team.
