A Pimlico radio station is hoping to hit the airwaves full-time - if it can prove to watchdogs it deserves its frequency.

SW1 Radio, based in Cumberland Street, goes live on the internet at 8am on Friday, with the DJs set to take up a temporary licence on FM frequency radio for four weeks in December.

DJ Danielle Montana said: "We'll definitely be on the internet for a year, but after that we're looking to become more permanent. The only problem is that there are so few radio frequencies left that cover London. We have to show Ofcom how much support we've got from the community as they decide who gets an FM slot."

She added that SW1 Radio was still looking for volunteers to help cover the shows. "DJs have to have an interest in the SW1 postcode area," she said.
"We've been offered the chance to move to Leicester Square, in the West End, but we've turned it down because we want to stay a local community radio station. On the shows, we play music then talk about clubs or events that listeners can go to in the area."

The idea behind SW1 Radio started when Ms Montana realised she had lived in Pimlico for 18 years, but knew little about activities available to her in the area.

SW1 Radio will be told their FM frequency one week before they go on air, which will be between Wednesday, December 3 and Tuesday, December 30. To get involved see www.sw1radio.co.uk or call 0207 592 9255.
