HOUSEHOLDS will be able to recycle food for the first time as new waste containers are to be installed at nearly 200 homes in Brent.

Greenpark Court in Bridgewater Road, Alperton, and Sudbury housing blocks Barham Court in Barham Close, Norfolk Court in Linthorpe Avenue and Rokesby Place in Copland Avenue – a total of 193 flats – will benefit from the service by mid-July.

Councillor Roxanne Mashari, lead member for environment and neighbourhoods, said: “I’m delighted that our residents in blocks of flats can now recycle more of their food waste. It means that instead of adding to the costs of sending food waste to landfill, where it can release harmful gases such as methane, it is being recycled and not damaging the environment.

“Brent’s residents have made great strides in improving recycling since last year including food waste. Now we will be able to do even better as a borough.”

Every household in Brent is estimated to create about 3kg of food waste every week.
