Plans for a new boys school in Isleworth failed to make the cut in the latest list of free schools to be approved by the Government.

The Green School for Boys, which would be a sister school to The Green School for Girls , was not among the 38 schools yesterday given the green light to open.

The Green School Trust said the Department for Education had 'recognised the strengths' of its proposal but identified 'minor issues for clarification'.

The trust refused to say what those 'minor issues' were but claimed it had been encouraged to reapply in October, with a view to opening the new school in September 2016 as envisaged in its original application.

The latest wave of free schools approved is much smaller than the 102 which got the nod in May last year, suggesting the Government is being more cautious following criticism of some free schools.

The Green School Trust's proposals were for an all-boy Church of England secondary school which would have had 1,260 pupils by the time it reached full capacity in 2023.

The location has yet to be decided but directors of the trust have said it would ideally be located within a mile of the existing girls school in Busch Corner, Isleworth.

The trust said the Department for Education had praised its application for:

* offering a credible proposal with a clear rational for establishing a Church of England boys school in Hounslow

* demonstrating the strong track record of the existing girls school

* demonstrating successful engagement with a broad section of the local community, resulting in good evidence of parental demand
