Colorful celebrations marking the triumph of good over evil were held over a joyous nine-day festival.

Worshippers at Adhya Shakti Mataji temple, in Cowley High Road, Cowley , gathered for the Hindu festival of Navrati - which means ‘nine nights’ - for the 47th year, and for the 6th successive year since they relocated to Cowley High Road.

From September 25 until October 4 more than 1,000 people of various faiths including politicians and representatives from the police came together to celebrate, and on the eighth morning a ceremonial holy fire was prepared inside the temple.

General secretary of the temple Mamta Nagda said: “We were really happy to welcome all the different politicians, their partners and later in the week the police officers.

“What it is all about is fun and music and they joined in brilliantly with the dancing and our competitions that we run.

“We also raised more than £6,000 for charity, and because it is such an auspicious time for us we will use the money to donate to causes that will help children alongside supporting the work we do.”
