I would like to add my comments to the article by Robert Cumber on 'Please save our fields', Chronicle, May 22.

I wish to point out that the responsibility of having a safe neighbourhood is not just the responsibility of a hard-pressed and under-funded local police force but for all members of the community.

I think we all have a part to play in ensuring neighbours, particularly the young and elderly, are safe and free from the threat of harm by encouraging better social meetings and improved alarm and communication systems particularly on the estates.

The article made for unsavoury reading but I believe most right-minded people would have played some role in alerting the authorities to take action.

The police are suffering from financial restraints but this is only justified when the cuts are necessary and have good reason - penny-scrimping meanness is not one of them and could endanger lives.
