The new-look Brentford Market Place was officially unveiled yesterday with music, dance and children's rides among the activities taking place to celebrate the opening.

The square outside the old Brentford Magistrates' Court has been repaved and new fountains, trees and benches have been installed as part of a £2 million facelift for Brentford town centre.

Alongside the usual Sunday market at the site in Brentford High Street, crowds were treated to music from St Michael's and All Angels Steel Band and the London College of Music, plus displays from Alluminae Dance throughout the day.

There were also children's activities, including the carousel which used to be regular sight outside the Treaty Centre in Hounslow High Street.

Yesterday's festivities were part of a weekend of free entertainment in Brentford, with crowds having enjoyed a floating cinema and other attractions at Brentford Lock last Friday.

The £2 million town centre regeneration was paid for using £1 million from Hounslow Council and the same again from the Mayor of London's Outer London Fund.
