At a time when hard working families across Hounslow are struggling to make ends meet with rising food and fuel prices, and with difficult decisions having to be made by the Coalition Government to bring down the immense deficit, Liberal Democrats in Government have ensured those on the lowest incomes get the biggest helping hand.

As of 1 April this year, the average worker in Hounslow will find themselves up to £600 better off per year, with those on the lowest wages benefitting the most from this tax cut.  Thanks to this change, people earning the minimum wage will have seen their income tax bill halved since 2010.

By cutting income tax in this way, those who work hard on low pay are able to keep more of their hard earned cash, rather than having the money taken away by the taxman and then claiming it back through complicated means-tested tax credits.  This is particularly important for those whose income fluctuates from week to week or month to month, depending on the hours they are able to work.

Yet we are keen to go even further and are pressing hard to cut tax by £700 per year for the lowest earners.  At the same time, the Government has taken some important steps in closing loopholes for the super-rich so that they pay their fair share, but more needs to be done.  The Liberal Democrats are also pressing for a “mansion tax” on the value of homes over £2 million. This would affect less than 0.1% of the population but would raise nearly £2 billion.

We need your support to cut tax further for hard working families and to ensure the super-rich pay more. This Saturday (9 th  Feb) is a national day of action on securing a fairer tax system.  Please visit www.fairertax.org  to show your support for the campaign and to participate in the day of action.
