Conventional wisdom that young people are turned off by politics is wide of the mark, according to MP Virendra Sharma .

The Labour MP dropped in at Featherstone High School in his Ealing Southall constituency on June 26 to meet A Level Sociology and Politics students and answer their questions.

He spoke to the students about the role of government, of elected representatives and about local and national issues. He was also given a tour of the sixth form building by two of the students.

Mr Sharma said: ‘It is always a pleasure to be able to meet with students and discuss the issues that matter most to them. Many people will say that young people are uninterested in politics, but it was great to see students so engaged with both national and local issues.

"They had many incisive and informed questions about the way that Parliament functions, matters concerning their neighbourhood and some even asked about getting more involved in politics! As future voters and change makers, it’s heartening to witness their involvement in the political process."
