A campaign which calls for an end to violence against girls has been setup with the support of Feltham and Heston MP Seema Malhotra.

As one of the first steps in her newly appointed role as shadow minister for preventing violence against women and girls, she helped launch children's charity Plan UK's 'Face Up to Violence' campaign, at Waterloo station on Friday (10), alongside actors and presenters.

To spread the word, celebrities, politicians and members of the public are asked to go to Plan UK's website upload a photo with the message 'I'm putting girls' rights where they can't be ignored' and submit the photo online.

The campaign was part of a number of activities for International Day of the Girl on Saturday (11) which raises awareness of gender inequalities and abuse suffered by girls around the world, with this year's theme titled "Empowering adolescent girls: Ending the cycle of violence".

Ms Malhotra who was appointed to her shadow minister role in August, said: “The level of violence against girls in our country and across the globe is horrific.

"FGM, forced marriage, domestic and sexual abuse, rape used as a weapon of war, and discrimination against girls are practices still prevalent in countries around the world.

"And here in the UK the levels of sexual and domestic violence remain a national scandal.

"International Day of the Girl is an important moment, a positive campaign, where we can stand side-by-side with women and girls across the world and say: ‘We will not stand for this. We want change.’”

Tackling the issue is a priority for the government and earlier this year, Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper MP announced a new legislation would be brought in to give better support to victims of violence and bring perpetrators to justice.
