Neighbours concerned with speeding cars on their street are calling on the council to improve safety.

Households in Somervell Road, in South Harrow, have been signing up to a petition calling on Harrow Council to stop cars driving over the speed limit, causing a risk to the children of nearby Earlsmead Primary School.

“We have had an incident just a few weeks ago where someone has had their car hit so hard and quick it turned upside down. Pets have died too, and lots of people are upset that this is all going on on their street.

“We feel responsible now to get our message heard, get all the information out, and say to the council: ‘Let’s get this sorted out before it is too late’.

“This is a hazard and it does need to be addressed soon.”

The petition was handed to Harrow Council and was discussed at a traffic and road safety advisory panel on Wednesday last week.

MP for Harrow West Gareth Thomas (Labour) said: “It’s clear that cars and other vehicles have been travelling above the speed limit and using Somervell Road as a rat run.

“This is particularly troubling as there is a school nearby.

“I hope that Harrow Council are able to take positive steps to reduce the speed of cars and make sure they keep under the speed limit.”

A Harrow Council spokesman said: “We are aware that some residents in Somervell Road have been concerned about excessive speeding.

“We have investigated the area thoroughly and this will be discussed at the Traffic and Road Safety Advisory Panel on 10 December.

“Following this meeting the council will decide if it any action is required.”
