Hayes and Harlington MP John McDonnell came to verbal blows with David Cameron in the House of Commons, calling Tory leader a "liar" over a third runway at Heathrow.

Mr McDonnell, speaking during Prime Minister's Questions this afternoon (Wednesday), said that his constituents believed Mr Cameron when he pledged that there would be no expansion at Heathrow.

He added: "They now face the threat of a third runway, a fourth runway, thousands losing their home, schools demolished, even the threat of having to dig up our dead at the local cemetery."

The independent Airports Commission, set up by the government to explore ways to provide extra airport capacity in the south east of England, shortlisted two Heathrow expansion options in its interim report, published yesterday (Tuesday).

Mr Cameron dismissed the backbencher's accusations and insisted the promise not to commit to a third runway in this term of government would be kept, but he was interrupted by Mr McDonnell who shouted: "You lied to my constituents."

Speaker John Bercow stepped in to cool the heated exchange, with the Prime Minister saying that he had shouted across the house "in a completely inappropriate way.
