Scores of motorists fined for parking on single yellow lines in Hounslow on Boxing Day and New Year's Day, including many Brentford FC fans, have been promised a refund.

Hounslow Council today agreed to cancel the tickets and offer a full refund following complaints, which were highlighted by getwestlondon earlier this month.

The refund will not apply to those who parked on double yellows or in other dangerous locations, such as zig-zag lines at pedestrian crossings.

Deputy council leader Amrit Mann also promised to review the council's parking policy for bank holidays in the wake of the backlash.

"As a show of goodwill, we have decided to cancel and refund all those who received a ticket who parked on a single yellow line on Boxing Day 2014 and New Year’s Day 2015," he said.

"We have decided to listen and respond. We will also be undertaking a review of parking policy on bank holidays to see if there is a way to relax them without compromising public safety.

"But motorists are reminded it's their responsibility to park legally, checking signage and the council's website where necessary."

In total, 108 parking fines were issued across the borough on December 26 last year, many to fans attending the Bees' Championship clash with Ipswich that day. The number of tickets doled out on New Year's Day is not known.

Dr Ian Weatherhead, who was among those to receive a £110 fine, had accused the council of failing to show any Christmas spirit, saying at the time: "Bah Humbug Hounslow, and shame on you."
