A CELEBRATORY evening was held to mark the success of Harrow having the first Fairtrade mosque in the whole of London.

Harrow Central Mosque, in Station Road, Harrow, was accredited after pledging to take part in a number of projects, including hosting talks from the Fairtrade Foundation and sessions for children and parents about Fairtrade chocolate and bananas, held by visitors from Ghana and Colombia.

Representatives were presented with their award at the Fairtrade Summit on Tuesday last week by Harrow Council leader, Councillor Susan Hall (Conservative) and the Mayor of Harrow, Councillor Nana Asante, who is also the chairman of the Harrow Fairtrade Campaign.

Ms Asante said: “The fact that these places of worship are now Fairtrade is a fantastic step towards our ambition of Harrow being declared a fully Fairtrade borough.”

Chairman of Harrow Central Mosque, Irfan Hussain, said: “Harrow Central Mosque is proud of being the first and only Fairtrade mosque in London.”

Ms Hall added: “We are committed to making Harrow a fairer borough and this includes ensuring that the people who make the food that we eat and the products we buy are paid a fair amount for the work they do.”
