Morris dancers will be holding recruitment days in Harrow following fears the traditional craft is dying out.

From this April, Harrow Council will provide performance space in council facilities to allow its local side, the Harrow-based Merrydowners Morris, to showcase their skills. The authority will also help to market the recruitment workshops.

The council already routinely invites the Merrydowners Morris to perform at Harrow events. The troupe has performed at Harrow's St George's Day, the borough's New Year's Day celebrations and appeared at the Under One Sky event.

Director of community and cultural services Javed Khan said: "I enjoyed Morris Dancing at school so I know first hand it is a fantastic tradition that we should keep alive for our young people.

"Harrow is all about celebrating different cultures, and Morris dancing is a key part of English folk history. We are more than happy to back it."
