Councillor David Ashton is at it again. Once again he talks about the alleged financial 'black hole' left by the previous Labour administration, ['Financial mess left by Labour', Letters, October 9]. Interestingly this has suddenly fallen from £19million in previous letters to £9m. Of course none of this is true.

The Conservatives have now been in power in Harrow for almost twoand-a-half years.

The Audit Commission deems Harrow to be the worst performing Council in London and indeed in England.

According to the council's own opinion poll survey, 87 per cent of Harrow residents think that Harrow Council has not improved in the last three years and residents' satisfaction with the council has slumped by 12 per cent over the same period.

I hardly need point out that despite the efforts of ourselves and local residents the High Court had to intervene to prevent his administration from illegally cutting social care to the most vulnerable in Harrow.

It would have been nice if there had been an admission of fault or an apology for this. In addition,

his administration's unpopular, over-complex plans for the high-rise,over-development of the town centre and for a substandard replacement for the leisure centre have all come crashing down on his head.

Leaving aside his comments about what is happening locally, I do hope he will give his support to Gordon Brown as he shows true international leadership in dealing with the unprecedented financial turbulence affecting all the world's economies. BILL STEPHENSON
