A MILLION pounds will be spent on the borough’s shopping parades as the council rolls out a series of improvements for Ealing Town Centre.

The council cabinet agreed last week to allocate £1million for the regeneration of nine local parades in Ealing as well as approving the next phase of town centre improvements.

Ealing currently has 61 small, local shopping parades. Eleven were renewed in between 2011 and 2012 and a further five will be finished by the end of April. Roads and pavements have been resurfaced, park benches, rubbish bins and signs were installed, new trees planted and the areas were made safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

New disabled parking bays were also installed near to health centres and chemists shops. Parking and loading restrictions were simplified to make it easier for people to visit their local shops and more for cars spaces have been made available.

The next nine parades to receive a spruce-up will be: Greenford Avenue at Poets Corner, Hanwell; Lady Margaret Road, numbers 177-203, Southall; Western Road, by Featherstone Road, Southall; Acton Lane, by Saville Road, Acton; Greenford Road, by Costons Lane and the A40, Greenford; St John’s Parade, Mattock Lane, Ealing; Haydock Green, Racecourse Estate, Northolt; Down Way, Northolt and South Parade, Southfields.

Cabinet also agreed to continue with the works to improve Ealing Broadway town centre. New kerbs and Yorkstone footways will be laid in front of Perceval House next to the Town Hall and on New Broadway from the cinema site to Bond Street.

A raised table will be installed at the junction of Bond Street and Uxbridge Road to make it safer for pedestrians to cross and the crossing outside WH Smiths will be widened.

Pavements will also be reorganised and improved and new benches, rubbish bins and signs will be installed where needed and removed where unnecessary.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, Ealing leader for transport and the environment, said: “This is a good investment. Our streets and pavements need regular renewal and we want to spend our money on the areas that need it most.

“We think it’s important to support local shopping areas, which is why we are continuing our shopping parade improvements. At the same time, there are big plans for Ealing Broadway, including the Dickens Yard development and the new cinema quarter.

“Alongside these projects, our works will help to make our main town centre more attractive to people from the local area and further afield.”
