More than 500 people have signed a new petition opposing a third runway at Heathrow.

The petition, which also demands better noise insulation for schools and homes under the flight paths, was launched by Hounslow Council earlier this month with little fanfare.

It had already been signed by 501 people as of 3pm this afternoon (3pm), with plenty of time for more people to add their names ahead of the March 8 deadline.

The petition follows a major consultation on Heathrow's future carried out by the council last year, in which 72 per cent of respondents said they opposed a new runway at the airport.

The petition was launched as Heathrow this week highlighted new polls suggesting support for a third runway was growing among both residents and MPs.

The Airports Commission is considering whether to support a third runway at Heathrow, a second landing strip at Gatwick or an extension to the northern runway at Heathrow. It is due to make its final recommendations next summer.
