Mixed reactions were met by people in Chiswick after the first signs of Poundland appeared on the high street.

People have taken to social media site Twitter all week to express just how they feel about the discount store coming to the area, which is due to open its doors on Saturday (27).

Many phrases have been used to describe the impending opening which has created 20 jobs, from "wealthy people like bargains too" and "it's like a student's dream" to "no Poundland you are not welcome here" and "Chiswick has a Poundland....time to move".

One of the more illustrative tweets shows Luke Skywalker in pain with the phrase Noooooo!

Another interesting tweet from a life-long resident of Chiswick pointed out there used to be 99p stores in the area years ago.

Here are some other reactions from Twitter to the news.

The Poundland is located between Waitrose and Marks & Spencers on Chiswick High Road and replaces the McDonald's which closed down after more than 30 years on the high street, back in May.

Poundland’s trading director, Richard Lancaster, said: “We are delighted to bring our unique proposition to Chiswick.

"Poundland offers amazing value on top branded products to over five million customers every week. The £1 price hasn’t changed since we opened our first store 24 years ago.”
