A PROPOSED 'Tesco village' which includes a new superstore, hotel, and homes, has gained a mixed reaction from members of the community.

Tesco has submitted plans to build on the site of the now demolished Master Brewer Hotel at Hillingdon Circus.

It tried and failed to do so in 2005, and as a result the superstore has majorly scaled back its plans in comparison.

Robert Elliot, a driver who has lived at Freezeland Way opposite the site for 14 years, said: "I am in favour of the plan because it would allow me to do a good grocery shop close to home.

"At the moment I travel to West Drayton for shopping and Tesco would offer the prices and selection needed in a good store. The plan for regeneration is progress and I hope it goes ahead."

The initial plans include 53 homes, but Tesco's regeneration arm Spenhill say the number is likely to increase.

A total of 99 car residential parking spaces are proposed on site, but even if this number of homes was reached, it would be far less than the 2005 application of 221 homes.

Nicola Redhead is a revenue officer and lives in Victoria Avenue, Hillingdon, she said: "I was in favour of the plans last time. The area needs development and new jobs. Progress is important to help the area out of recession, change does not have to be a negative. I believe it can be a positive.”

Chris Phillips, a local resident, disagrees that the development is what is needed and voiced his disapproval of the scheme.

He said: "When is Tesco going to learn that the local community neither wants or needs Tesco or any other superstore supplier to have greater influence over our lives.

"The current retailers serve our community perfectly well and we can drive a mile in any direction to find a superstore if we choose.

"It is interesting that Tesco have retained a hotel as central to their scheme as in fact it is about the only thing that the site is suited to and would be welcomed, the previous hotel was well frequented by the local community.

"My greatest fear is that Tesco will agree to pay Hillingdon Council such an attractive section 106 planning gain to get what they want in the current climate that the council will not have the courage to reject."
