The Val Burrell Memorial Cup six-a-sides are played in memory of the mother of former Wealdstone FC midfielder Gary Burrell, so it was perhaps appropriate that, in the third year of the tournament, it was Gary's team, Hobbsy's Boys, who walked off with the honours on Saturday (14).
Twelve teams contested the tournament, held at the Brent Nalgo home of Forest United, the club with whom Gary began his footballing career, and it started and ended in identical fashion.
In the opening group match, Hobbsy's Boys had a 1-0 win over Juan Day Heffs and both teams went on to make it to the final where a close fought game ended goalless. But Hobbsy's Boys got the better of their rivals in the deciding penalty shoot out and lifted the cup.
The organisers are hoping that the event will have raised in excess of £1,000 for St Luke's Hospice.
