An ancient moat which could date back to the medieval period has been discovered encircling Fulham Palace.

Archaeologists unearthed 1.4 kilometres of moat which was fed by water from the Thames and are hoping to piece together clues of who built it.

References to a moat have been recorded as far back as 1392 but some experts believe it may date back further to the Iron Age.

Fulham Council filled the trench in during the 1920s on the request of the Bishop of London who lived at the palace.

Dr Scott Cooper, director of Fulham Palace, said: "It's absolutely fascinating to think that this moat used to encircle the Palace. It is thrilling to uncover one of the hidden treasures of the borough."

A free tour of the moat and recent excavations takes place on Monday June 29 at 6.30pm.
