THE Mayor of Westminster swapped her gold chain and ceremonial robes for goggles and a parachute when she plunged thousands of feet in a freefall charity skydive.

Cllr Louise Hyams made the tandem leap from more than 13,500ft at Hinton Airfield in Northamptonshire last Wednesday.

The mayor raised more than £5,000 for the charity For Dementia, which works to improve the quality of life for dementia patients and their families.

After the skydive, Cllr Hyams said: "I was very nervous when it was my turn to jump out of the plane and I could see the ground far below, but once I was falling through the air it felt truly exhilarating.

"I completed the jump in honour of my mother, who suffers from this dreadful condition, so I'm thrilled to have been able to raise money and increase the profile of the extremely important work and support provided by For Dementia."

Four others took part in the jump and a further £2,000 is due to be collected from them in charity donations.
