ENGINEERS have shut Stanmore's Marsh Lane to repair two burst water mains that left households without a supply for the best part of 12 hours.

The route is closed in both directions between London Road and Whitchurch Lane for repair works and traffic has had to be diverted for the Monday morning rush hour.

The pipes failed on Saturday at 8.30pm, flooding the road, and Veolia Water employees spent the day trying to fix the leaks, which were located near a high pressure gas main and so British Gas engineers had to be called out to advise.

Unfortunately repairmen suffered a setback when the smaller of the two mains cracked again at 10.30pm that night while it was being repaired.

In the meantime, Veolia Water delivered bottled water to drop off points in Stanmore and Wembley as properties in the HA7, HA8 and NW9 postcodes were affected.

Both leaks have been repaired as of 7am today although some customers were still experiencing intermittent water during the peak demand period while engineers flush the air out of the smaller mains pipe.
