MANDEVILLE special school, in Greenford, was given approval to expand by Ealing Council’s cabinet on Tuesday.
Expansion works will create new classrooms, hall space, therapy space and staff training rooms. It will enable an extra 45 children to attend and is part of a borough-wide increase in special needs places.
Mandeville caters for children with profound and multiple learning needs, autistic spectrum disorders and severe learning difficulties, and has been rated outstanding by Ofsted.
Parents, staff and residents will be asked for their views on the plans and subject to positive feedback, work could start as early as this spring.
Councillor Patricia Walker, leader for children and young people said: “Ealing’s rising birth rate means that the number of students with special needs and learning difficulties is also increasing. As well as investing in expanding places for mainstream primary pupils, we have a duty to provide more places for children with special needs.
“These expansions will mean that some of our most vulnerable local children will be able to attend excellent Ealing schools rather than potentially travel long distances out of borough.”
