THERE were dramatic scenes in West Ealing on Wednesday when a man apparently threatened to jump off a roof.

Several police vehicles converged on the area from about 4pm after receiving calls of a man standing on the roof of a building at 43 The Broadway.

The middle of the Broadway was closed to traffic as crowds gathered to watch the man and there was a flurry of activity on Twitter.

Dee Ward, a West Ealing resident, was sat outside a cafe in West Ealing Broadway when the commotion began. She said: “I was here when it all kicked off. Someone said something about a man being on a roof and then before I knew what I was doing there were sirens and vehicles everywhere.

“Fire engines started turning up and there was a ladder put against the building he was on top of. It was all very dramatic, not the sort of thing you expect to see round here.”

A spokeswoman for Ealing Police said: “Police were called to reports of a man on a roof in The Broadway, West Ealing.

“After a number of hours, the man, aged 30, came down from the roof at about 9pm and was checked by London Ambulance staff.

“He was subsequently arrested and has since been detained under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act.”
