A man has died in a fire at a Brentford flat this morning.

London Fire Brigade was called to a housing block in Layton Road just before 7am, and sent four fire engines and 21 firefighters.

It said part of a ground floor flat had been damaged and an elderly man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police spokesman said the man was in his 60s. He added that officers believe they know the man's identity but are awaiting formal identification, and efforts are underway to contact his next of kin.

The blaze was attended by fire engines from Chiswick, Heston and Acton fire stations.

The cause of the fire, which was under control at 7.37am, is under investigation.
