A EIGHT giant green sticks are to be erected alongside the M4 near Boston Manor Park to celebrate the 2012 Olympics.

The bizarre artwork will be the creation of the London Playing Fields Foundation and designed by Jason Bruges Studios, who have been commissioned to produce other pieces for the Olympic Park.

Hounslow Council granted planning permission for the structures - dubbed the Gateway to London - on October 27, having decided that the flashing structures would add interest to the route into the Capital and highlight Hounslow’s role in the games.

Chief Executive of the London Playing Fields Foundation, Alex Welsh, said: “With 32 million vehicles using this part of the motorway during 2012, we are confident that the Gateway to London will not only give a sponsor extraordinary exposure, but will enable them to be part of providing West London with a vital piece of sporting legacy."

The art structure will remain up for a maximum of 12 months, and creators believe it could attract sponsorshop.

However mixed opinions arose because, not only is the site metropolitan open land, which must be clearly distinguishable from built-up areas, but Brentford Community Council (BCC) also said the artwork will clutter the skyline.

Dennis Browne of BCC said: "These are advertising sticks, and there is too much of this in the area. This has come along with the Chiswick roundabout octopus and it is just too much. We will end up with a plethora of advertising.

"It is also a safety hazard to have on a motorway, and we have historic landscape with a Grade 1 building which is being broken up."

The art structure will remain up for a maximum of 12 months, and creators say it will be ideal for sponsoring.

Alex Welsh, Chief Executive of the London Playing Fields Foundation, said: “We do not yet know an exact figure of how much the structure will cost, but we hope get sponsoring from businesses and groups so we can raise £750,000 to refurbish the Boston Manor sports pavilion."
