A memorial mural was unveiled outside a primary school to commemorate a pensioner killed in a nearby alleyway.

Coston Primary in Oldfield Lane South, Greenford, revealed the artwork on Friday (28). It is a tribute to Paula Castle who was killed in the alley adjoining Goring Way and Oldfield Lane in November 2012.

The 85-year-old partially-sighted grandmother was knocked down in broad daylight by two 15-year-olds who snatched her bank cards to buy takeaways, mobile phone top-ups and Nike trainers.

Following the tragedy, Coston Primary and Ealing Council established a Streetwatcher group to plant flowers and shrubs on the corner of the alley, used by many parents and children.

The project was developed further and the school, council, and Mrs Castle’s family organised and judged a competition to design a mural that would portray Mrs Castle’s love for nature and promote respect for the area.

The winning design, by year two student Igor Pala, seven, has been fixed to the school railings on the top of the alley.

Year one teacher, Deborah Goodman, said: “We wanted to commemorate the life of Mrs Paula Castle, a lovely local resident, and her love of nature and at the same time to maintain a clean and bright environment that would encourage the proliferation of wildlife while helping to remind people not to litter the site.

“The winning design was adapted and we used a range of recycled materials and have worked hard over the past month to complete the mural.

“We invited those children who were involved and their parents and carers, alongside the family of Mrs Castle including her daughter Jane and grandchildren who helped to judge the competition.

“There is a dedication to Mrs Castle on the mural and Ealing Council have arranged for the artwork to be framed and mounted on the school fence so the idea is that it stays there forever.”

Coston Primary aim to continue maintaining the site and to plant poppies with the help of members of the Greenford Royal British Legion.

The school also plans to landscape the area and plant a commemorative garden.

Mrs Castle’s killers Jiervon Bartlett, of Sentinel Close in Northolt, and Nayed Hoque of Bow, were each sentenced to six years after admitting manslaughter at the Old Bailey last May.

Pictures of the mural and a report on the unveiling will be updated soon.
