ALMOST 80 calls were made to the ambulance service from one furniture shop in Wembley in 2013.

The London Ambulance Service confirmed that last year 79 calls were made from IKEA , North Circular Road, Wembley, to a variety of incidents including people being taken unwell and injuries from falls.

Pedro Abreu, IKEA Wembley store manager, said: “With more than two million visitors to the store each year, the safety of our customers and co-workers is always our highest priority. To this end, we always take the precaution of calling for medical help when there is an illness or accident that requires attention beyond basic first aid offered by our co-workers”.

A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said that the number of incidents may have been lower as more than one call could have been for an incident.

The matter was raised at a meeting of Brent Clinical Commissioning Group as there was concern over the high level of calls.

A spokeswoman for the CCG said: "Brent Clinical Commissioning Group regularly monitors locations where there is high usage of the London Ambulance Service to see if steps can be put in place to meet needs in a more effective way. Through this monitoring, it was brought to our attention that there have been a large number of ambulances called out to the IKEA store in Brent.

"This is likely to be due to the high number of people that visit the store and a small proportion of them unexpectedly becoming unwell, and is therefore understandable under the circumstances. At this point the CCG does not intend to target any additional support to IKEA."
