A CHURCH in Hayes helped set a new carol singing world record on Sunday (18).
Around 60 carollers gathered at Hayes End Methodist Church, in Uxbridge Road, to sing a programme of festive favourites - Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful and others - in unison with 17,117 people across the country.
Should this number be verified, it would smash the previous record of 15,000 singers, set in 2009.
The Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor Mary O'Connor MBE, Councillor Shirley Harper-O'Neill (Cons, South Ruislip) and David Brough, of the Hayes Town Partnership, were independent witnesses.
The attempt was organised by Premier Christian Radio, and its CEO Peter Kerridge said: "It's inspiring to see so many people across the whole of the UK get on board for this record breaking attempt.
"It's been a lot of fun, and has brought people out to celebrate and really be a part of the spirit of Christmas.
"As far as we can tell with these initial figures, we've broken the record!
"We hope to get the rubber stamp from Guinness in the next few months."
