FURTHER to the front page article in the Pinner Observer (Plea to Lloyds: Give us a hand, December 20), I am truly amazed that Gareth Thomas appears to have recently realised that North Harrow's viability as a district centre is in dire straits. Where has he been for the past 10 years?

The dismal-looking flats that were erected on the Safeways site that promised a new supermarket beneath was the last nail in the coffin.

And as for the remark that many people are unaware that one can use the post office for Lloyds banking - we are aware, but what an advert for Lloyds bank to conduct confidential banking business in a cross between a hardware shop and a bric-a-brac shop, where there is no privacy!

Over the past years we have lost five banks, Boots the chemist and many other valuable retail shops. How long before the remaining valuable shops pack up and exit too?

Where have our elected councillors been all these

years, and what have they done for the residents? Calling on us once election time nears.

The newly elected independent councillor seems to be the only one who holds a regular surgery, lives in the borough and keeps us informed.

The new North Harrow community centre due to be built appears to be supported by people who do not reside mainly in North Harrow.

How sad to see such a decline in a once thriving area.
