I READ the letter about rubbish collection which followed a council leaders' column.

Why does the council not empty bins every day?

The Spanish rubbish collection can almost be timed to the minute. Where I live in Torrevieja the binmen arrive at a few minutes past midnight every night to empty the bin in the street.

There are three men to each lorry - a driver and two operatives at the rear, who attach the large street bin to the lorry mechanism and, once emptied, put it tidily back in its place in the street.

People bag up their rubbish, in plastic carrier bags if necessary, and carry it to the bin every day.

The bins are big and have lids, so no stray animals get in.

And there is no necessity for each house to have a wheelie bin and there is no house to house collection.

It is much simpler than the service I suffered when working in Uxbridge. And I repeat; it happens every night.
