We read that thieves can sell drain covers for scrap metal and get about £10 each for them.
The local authority state that they have to fork out £325 for replacements.
Quite apart from the fact that the gullible council are being robbed blind at that cost, there is a much easier, and far cheaper alternative which could be adopted.
If the council offered £15 per drain cover, the thief would be 50 per cent better off than dealing with a scrap merchant, and the council would be paying less than five of their current outlay.
They would be able to buy the same drain cover back from the thief 21 times before they started making a loss on their previous figures.
This would be of mutual benefit to the thieves and to the council.
