SOME of Hillingdon’s most significant landmarks will open their doors to the public this weekend, as part of Open House London 2012.
Thirteen buildings in the borough feature on the programme of the annual festival, taking place this Saturday and Sunday, giving people the opportunity to see celebrated sites preserved over centuries and steeped in history, as well as spectacular new architecture across the capital, all for free.
Amongst them are Swakeleys House, a Jacobean house built in the 17th century; Brunel University’s world-class indoor athletics centre; and six churches, including St Martin’s Church and Parish Church, in Ruislip and West Drayton respectively.
There will be a live agricultural display at Harmondsworth’s medieval Great Barn.
Tours take place at different times, and some are scheduled for just one day. Ballot places for tours of Grade I listed Ickenham Manor, the medieval mansion house, and the stunning Wallis, Gilbert and Partners buildings on the former factory site of EMI in Hayes, now part of The Old Vinyl Factory's ambitious £250million development, were snapped up quickly and are now full.
