Labour campaigners were at Hounslow borough’s train stations early on Monday morning to protest against rising fares and planned staff cuts.

The party’s candidate for Brentford and Isleworth MP, Ruth Cadbury, met commuters at Chiswick Station as many headed to work for the first time after the 2.8 per cent rail fare increase came into effect on New Year’s Day.

Attacking the Government, she said: “Londoners face another year of rising fares for a worse service, thanks to Boris Johnson and his Tory friends in Government.”

She made a promise that Labour would cap rail fares if they win the 2015 general election, and ensure that stations are staffed, accessible and safe for everyone.

Monday marked the start of a week of action for the Labour party, with tomorrow (Saturday) bringing street stalls to Hounslow High Street and Chiswick High Road to collect signatures for an energy freeze petition, described by Labour as the Cost of Cameron.

Ms Cadbury added: “The cost of living crisis is affecting many local people and I hope to meet and hear their stories on Saturday.”
