A concerned driver came to the rescue of an elderly dog after seeing it helplessly running around by a busy main road.

Julie Keep, 38, was on her way home from work at the Civic Centre in Uxbridge last Tuesday when she saw the dog, which has cataracts in both eyes, running on the A40 slip road towards Hillingdon Circus at 5.30pm.

She said: "It would have been killed on the A40 in the rush hour, so I stopped and got out and started chasing it. It turned around and ran back up towards the A40 and I managed to grab it.

"I took it to the Dogs Trust in Harefield and the next day it was taken to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home."

Luckily the dog was microchipped, and was reunited with his owner straight away.

Miss Keep said: "My gut instinct all along was that he was a wandering pet rather than a dumped dog, and I am happy this was the case and the story has a happy ending."
